How to calculate the cost of tiling
Use the form below to calculate the approximate cost of tiling walls and floors.

A tiled wall brings many advantages, such as:
- Better aesthetics.
- Waterproofing.
- Removes the need to paint often.
- Saves from allergies from carpets.
- Tiling also increases the resale value of the property.
The most important question is how much it costs to tile a wall or floor.
Cost can be categorized into two parts:
1. Materials
2. Workmanship
Here is an example...
I once got this quote for tiling an outside wall:
1. Tiles: Total sqm of the front of the house is 30 sqm.
Price: N1,400 per square meter.
N1,400 * 30 = N42,000k.
2. Black cement: 2500 * 6 bags = N15,000.
3. Sapro gum: 3000 * 3 bags = N9,000.
4. Workmanship: 9,000.
Total: 75,000.
Based on this quote, we can learn a few things:
- The total square meter of the space to be tiled is 30 sqm.
- The cost of the tiles per square meter is N1,400. So you buy your tiles per square meter.
- The workmanship is N9,000 for 30 sqm. This means 9000/30 = N300/sqm.
- We also have the cost of materials for the 30 sqm...
- Black cement: 6 bags for 30 sqm. That means one bag will do 5 sqm.
- Sapro gum: 3 bags for 30 sqm. That means one bag will do 10 sqm.
We can use this information to calculate the cost of any size of wall or floor.
What is common to all of the above listed items? It is that everything is based on square meter, i.e. sqm.
So the first thing you must know when calculating cost is the square meter, i.e. sqm of the space to tile.
How to calculate sqm.
- Measure the length
- Measure the height
- Multiply the length and height to get sqm.
Let's look at an example,
- total length = 3,000 centimeters.
- total height = 200 centimeters (6.5 feet).
- square centimeters = 3000*200 = 600,000 square centimeters.
To convert sqcm to sqm, divide by 10,000.
600,000 sqcm / 10,000 = 60 sqm.
So for this particular example, we are going to tile 60 sqm.
We can now choose any tile we want.
Ask for the price of tiles per square meter. Sellers may try to confuse you with dimensions, and price per carton. Those don't matter. Just ask for the price per square meter.
Similarly, when the tiler is giving you workmanship cost, ask for it per square meter.
Let's say we choose a tile that costs N1,600/sqm,
- Cost of tiles = N1,600 * 60 = N96,000.
- Workmanship = N300 * 60 = N18,000.
- Black cement. We need 60/5 bags = 12 bags. 3300*12 = 39,600.
- Sapro gum. We need 60/10 = 6 bags. 3000*6 = 18,000.
Total: 96,000 + 18,000 + 39,600 + 18,000 = N171,600.
Summary:
To calculate the cost of tiling,
- measure the total Length (cm).
- measure the Height (cm).
- multiply Length*Height to get sqcm.
- Divide sqcm by 10,000 to get sqm.
- Calculate cost of tiles.
- Calculate cost of black cement.
- Calculate cost of Sapro gum.
- Get the cost of workmanship.
- Add everything together to get the total cost.
The good news though is that I have made life easy for you by creating a tiling calculator, at the top of this age.
Share this calculator with everybody who may likely do tiling one day. With this calculator, nobody can give you arbitrary quotes anymore.
